“The Tomato Man” Returns For Heirloom Tomato Presentations At Two Grange Co-op Locations
CENTRAL POINT, OR —Grange Co-op is proud to present Steve “The Tomato Man” Goto and his free “Heirloom Tomatoes And How To Grow Them” seminars on Saturday, June 12, at the Central Point Grange, and Sunday, June 13, at the South Medford Grange Co-op Garden Center. Both presentations begin at 10 a.m. Attendees will learn about optimum growing of heirloom tomatoes, which are Goto’s specialty.

The presentation comes with an informational sheet on tomato cultivation. Attendees will also receive a coupon for a discount on vegetable plants and can enter a drawing for a free bag of Harvest Supreme or a 4-pound box of Dr. Earth Vegetable Food.

Steve Goto is a third generation nurseryman. He received his horticultural education at La Crescenta Nursery/Cyclamen Growers, Inc., where he learned the technical aspects of how to grow annuals, perennials and specialty crops such as cyclamens and orchids. Goto’s interest in heirloom vegetables grew as a result of customers asking him to grow custom crops of heirloom tomatoes and vegetables varieties.

In 1997 Goto took over the family business at Goto Nursery. Each year the nursery grew over 100 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes. His popularity rose because of the numerous seminars he conducted on How to Grow Tomatoes Organically and Introductions to Heirlooms Tomatoes. Steve also conducted ongoing product knowledge seminars for his retail garden customers to keep them updated on new products, growing techniques and new tomato varieties for each season. Steve Goto and Goto Nursery have been featured in Garden Compass, L.A. Magazine, Country Living, and Sunset Magazine, Pasadena Star News, L.A Times and Valley Daily News, San Jose Mercury News, Chinese Daily News, San Francisco Chronicle and Sacramento Bee.

Grange Co-op, which features a large stock of Log House Plants Heirloom Tomatoes, is offering two 5.5” pots of well-started tomato plants for $5, as well as Dr. Earth 12-pound bag of tomato fertilizer for $11.99, and two cubic foot bags of Gardner & Bloome Potting Soil at two for $13, available through June 20, 2010.

Grange Co-op was formed in 1934 when 99 Rogue Valley farmers invested $10 each to form a cooperative. Since that time, the Grange has grown steadily to include seven retail stores in Jackson, Josephine and Klamath counties, as well as a fertilizer plant and certified organic grain elevator, agronomy center, and two CFN cardlock fueling stations.
